Joypurhat: At least nine people were injured in a clash between leaders and activists of the BNP and an independent candidate in the West Gate area behind Joypurhat Government College on Wednesday afternoon. The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at Joypurhat General Hospital.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the clash erupted around 4:30 pm when independent candidate Sabekun Nahar (Shikha), who is contesting with the horse symbol in the Joypurhat-1 (Sadar and Panchbibi) constituency, arrived at the Government College area accompanied by her supporters. An altercation began with the supporters of BNP-nominated candidate Masud Rana Pradhan, who is contesting with the paddy sheaf symbol.
Sabekun Nahar claimed that as she was heading to visit a booth at the college center with her relatives and supporters, activists supporting the paddy sheaf candidate stopped and harassed her at the college gate. When her supporters intervened, they were attacked, leaving several people injured, incl
uding her brother-in-law.
In contrast, Mamunur Rashid Prodhan, the younger brother of BNP candidate Masud Rana Prodhan and president of the district Chhatra Dal, alleged that Sabekun Nahar had brought outsiders from Faridpur with intentions of vote buying. He claimed that when local BNP activists attempted to stop her, her supporters attacked them, resulting in injuries to several of their members.
Dr. Rashed Mubarak Jewel, Superintendent of Joypurhat General Hospital, stated that the injured received primary treatment and are now out of danger. Meanwhile, Anisur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station, noted that while he had heard about the incident, no formal complaint had been filed yet.
