Dhaka: BanglaFact, the fact-checking and media research wing of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB), has debunked the false claim of a video on social media platform depicting recovery of 1200 bags of rice from the house of Adviser Asif Mahmud. Debunking the claim, BanglaFact’s investigation report noted that the claim of recovering 1,200 sacks of rice from the house of adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan is fake, misleading, and false.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a video has been shared on social media Facebook claiming that 1,200 sacks of rice were recovered from the house of adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and that his father tried to manage the police by bribing them. BanglaFact has verified that the claim is not true.

The report further clarified that the video is actually from an incident involving the recovery of 16 sacks of rice from the house of a Union Parishad member in Shahrasti upazila of Chandpur. The BanglaFact search team identified the person arrested in the incident as Humayun Kabir, a member of ward No. 6 UP of Suchipara south union and former general secretary of Union Juba League.

Adviser Asif Mahmud also addressed the issue through a Facebook post. Expressing distress over the incident, he stated on his verified page that members of a banned organization had spread a video footage falsely linking him to an incident in Chandpur, which was then recirculated by activists from different political parties without verification.

Furthermore, adviser’s father, Mohammad Billal Hossen, clarified the situation to the media, asserting, “I’m not linked with any such case of annexation. A group of people is doing these things for attaining their self-interests by staging such drama of stealing 1200 sacks of rice.”
