Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has emphasized that no civilised country or society can progress if its image is not accurately reflected through the media. Speaking at a meeting organized by the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust in collaboration with the Barishal District Journalists Union at the Barishal Circuit House auditorium, Swapon underscored the crucial role of journalism in mirroring society.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapon remarked that while there is currently no structure to support journalism as a profession, the ability to reflect every aspect of society regularly in the media is essential for a nation's development. He stressed that journalism serves as a mirror to both the state and society, and without it, society could veer in harmful directions.
Swapon highlighted the challenge of distinguishing objective information in today's media landscape. He noted that two types of individuals, both carrying journalism credentials, are operating in the field-one aiming to accept this challenge and the other seeking to taint journalism's integrity. This dichotomy, he suggested, has led to calls for a clear definition of the journalism profession.
The minister expressed that the government alone cannot tackle this issue and emphasized the importance of responsible journalism for societal and national well-being. He acknowledged the financial challenges faced by journalists and lauded those who chose the profession for their dedication to this noble vocation.
Highlighting the evolving nature of journalism due to technological advancements, Swapon pointed out that the field now encompasses data, video, and audio journalism, indicating a need for the profession to adapt accordingly.
The meeting, presided over by Mohammad Abdul Bashir, Managing Director of the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust, was attended by Kawsar Hossain Khandaker, Shahjahan Saju, Azad Alauddin, and numerous journalists and officials. Swapon also distributed financial assistance to journalists and planted saplings in the Charkaua area earlier in the day.
