Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced Mohammad Selim Uddin as its candidate for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Shadik Kayem, Vice President of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), for the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in the forthcoming city corporation elections. Jamaat's Secretary General, Mia Golam Porwar, revealed these selections during a Seerat-un-Nabi (PBUH) conference held by the National Doctors Forum at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Jamaat is positioning itself as a key player in the upcoming local government elections, emphasizing its identity as an election-oriented party. Porwar highlighted that the party is in the final stages of organizing nominations for candidates across various local government bodies, including Union Parishads, Upazila Parishads, municipalities, and city corporations. In numerous locations, the party has already internally announced its candidates.
Porwar further confirmed Jamaat's commitment to participating in the elections for Dhaka's two city corporations, having selected their candidates through a thorough organisational process. He mentioned, "We will officially announce the candidates at the appropriate time. It has already appeared in the media that we have announced Selim Uddin as our candidate in Dhaka North and Shadik Kayem in Dhaka South."
Shadik Kayem, whose full name is Md Abu Shadik Kayem, gained recognition as a coordinator during the 2024 mass uprising and was subsequently elected DUCSU VP in the September 2025 election.
In a related development, the National Citizen Party (NCP) has also declared its mayoral candidates for the two Dhaka city corporations, nominating Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary for DSCC and Spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain for DNCC. Meanwhile, the ruling BNP has yet to reveal its candidates for these crucial city polls.
