Dhaka: The CID Police have arrested an individual from Bhola on charges of defrauding a woman by impersonating the Imam of Masjid-e-Nabawi in Saudi Arabia and extorting Taka 5.5 lakh from her.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrested individual has been identified as Md Sabuj. A team from the CID Cyber Police Centre, utilizing information technology, pinpointed Md Sabuj’s location and apprehended him from the Mulai Potton area under Borhan Uddin upazila of Bhola district.

Police revealed that the victim, a retired woman officer, had been experiencing family conflicts with her daughter-in-law for some time. In her search for resolution, she encountered Md Sabuj through a Facebook advertisement. Sabuj misrepresented himself as ‘Dorbesh Baba’ and the Imam of Masjid-e-Nabawi, demanding money from her. Succumbing to his demands, the woman transferred Taka 550,000 via mobile banking.

Sabuj further instructed her to keep the matter confidential, warning that disclosure would endanger the lives of he
r son and daughter-in-law. Suspicion arose during their mobile conversations, prompting the woman to file a fraud case against Sabuj with Kalabagan Thana on November 19. Subsequently, the CID police, in collaboration with Kalabagan Thana, arrested Md Sabuj in Bhola.

The CID police reported that Sabuj confessed to being part of a local gang involved in similar fraudulent activities. They have been deceiving unsuspecting individuals through platforms like Facebook, Youtube, and Imo by posing as Dorbesh Baba. The CID Cyber Police Centre is actively working to dismantle this criminal network and bring the perpetrators to justice.
