Dhaka: The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) today seized control of a locker belonging to the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina at a Pubali Bank branch in Motijheel. This action marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into alleged tax evasion by the deposed leader.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the CIC conducted a raid in the morning after receiving intelligence about the existence of the locker. A senior official from the bank confirmed that the locker would be unlocked following proper procedures as outlined by the Bangladesh Bank guidelines. The seizure of the locker is part of a broader inquiry into allegations that Hasina, who fled to India after a mass uprising, evaded taxes during her time in office.

The tax authority has also frozen Hasina's bank accounts as part of the investigation, officials stated. This move underscores the seriousness of the inquiry and the government's commitment to addressing the allegations against the former prime minister. The NBR's actions highlight the ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and transparency in financial dealings.
