Panchagarh:Chilly winds and morning fog are marking the onset of winter in northern Bangladesh, with the minimum temperature in Panchagarh recorded at 17.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Jitendranath Roy, acting officer of the Tetulia Meteorological Observatory, reported that the minimum temperature was noted at 17.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, while the maximum temperature reached 31.8 degrees Celsius the previous day.

Despite the warm sunshine during the day, temperatures have been dropping after midnight, giving a wintry feel to daily life. Locals have noted that they no longer need fans at night and have begun using light quilts or blankets. Morning fog and dew-covered grass have become common, with chilly winds making early mornings uncomfortable for outdoor workers. Stone workers have been observed heading to rivers in light warm clothing, while tea workers continue their tasks amidst dew-covered leaves.

Meteorologist Mostafizar Rahman from the Rangpur Met Office explained that the inactivity of the seasonal monsoon has contributed to the wintry conditions. The early morning fog typically clears as the day progresses, but temperatures are expected to decline further.

Residents of approximately 780 riverine chars in the northern region express concern over the approaching winter, calling for timely government support. Omar Faruk, a resident of Char Ichli, mentioned that the cold is noticeable from evening until 9 a.m., making blankets essential at night. Residents of the chars in Lalmonirhat also reported that the cold intensifies after midnight and remains until morning. Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Md Rashedul Hoque Prodhan stated that preparations are underway to manage the winter, with Upazila Nirbahi Officers instructed to prepare lists of people requiring assistance.
