Dhaka: A five-year-old girl, Jannati, was killed after being hit by a battery-operated auto-rickshaw in the Kamrangirchar area of the capital this afternoon. The accident took place around 3:00 pm while the child was playing on a road in Sylheti Bazar 7 No. Lane, local and police sources said.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, locals rescued her in critical condition and rushed her to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead at around 3:45 in the afternoon. Abdus Salam, a neighbour who took the child to the hospital, stated that a reckless battery-run auto-rickshaw hit the girl and fled the scene, leaving her seriously injured.
Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, reported that the body has been kept at the hospital morgue and the matter has been reported to the concerned police station. Jannati’s father, Mostafa, is a day labourer, while her mother works as a domestic worker.
The family’s permanent home is in Mominpur village under Jamalganj upazila of Sunamganj district, but they currently reside in a tin-shed house in Kamrangirchar. Jannati was the youngest among her siblings.
