Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today announced that the commission successfully conducted a peaceful and credible national election with the support of all stakeholders. "Through our collective efforts, we have been able to fulfill the promise we made to the nation," he stated during a views-exchange meeting in celebration of International Women's Day at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nasir emphasized that no voter reported being unable to cast their vote on Election Day. He recounted his visits to polling centers where he inquired about any voting difficulties, noting that not a single voter, including elderly women, reported any issues. "Everyone said they voted peacefully along with their families," he added.
The CEC also dismissed the use of the term "minority," expressing that all citizens are Bangladeshis first. He stressed the equality of all individuals, despite religious differences, and highlighted the significant yet undervalued economic contributions of women, stating that monetizing women's household work would significantly increase the country's GDP.
He commended female election officials for their integrity, acknowledging that no complaints of bias or irregularity were received against them. Plans to introduce special awards for female election officials were also mentioned in recognition of their performance.
Highlighting progress in female voter registration, the CEC reported a reduction in the gap between male and female voters from three million to one million due to a door-to-door voter list update campaign. He remarked that political objections often follow well-conducted elections, yet no grassroots-level complaints about voting access have surfaced.
The event, underscored by the theme "Ensure equality-men and women together to build the future," was presided over by Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat Akhtar Ahmed. Notable speakers included Election Commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Begum Tahmida Ahmed, and Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar, with additional attendance by UNDP, UN Women, and UNESCO representatives.
