Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus is set to depart for New York tomorrow night to participate in the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session. Professor Yunus is scheduled to arrive in New York on September 22 and will deliver his address to the UNGA on September 26, as stated by Chief Adviser's Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad this evening. Professor Yunus plans to return to Bangladesh on October 2.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain previously announced on September 17 that four political leaders will accompany the Bangladesh delegation at this year's assembly. These leaders include BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP leader Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, and National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Akhter Hossen.
In his upcoming speech, Professor Yunus is anticipated to highlight the government's accomplishments over the past year and reiterate the interim administration's dedication to reinstating democracy through reforms and the organization of free and fair elections scheduled for February next year, as mentioned by Touhid Hossain. The 80th UNGA holds particular importance for Bangladesh this year, as the UN will host a High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar on September 30 for the first time.
