Dhaka: Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus hosted a reception for the recipients of the 'Begum Rokeya Padak 2025' at the State Guest House Jamuna. The awardees, Dr Rubhana Rakib, Nabila Idris, Kalpana Akter, and Ritu Parna Chakma, were honored for their contributions in various fields.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event commenced with the awardees expressing their concerns over the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, a leader in the July Uprising-2024 and Spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha. They urged the government to take decisive action regarding the incident and emphasized the need for unity among political parties and citizens for the upcoming general election.
Prof Yunus addressed the attack on Hadi, describing it as premeditated. He assured the recipients of his ongoing communication with Hadi's family and noted that political parties were cooperating in the matter. The Chief Adviser also took the opportunity to learn about each recipient's professional engagements.
Kalpana Akter, honored for her work in women's rights and labor rights, expressed gratitude towards the Chief Adviser for amending labor laws and endorsing International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions. She remarked on the significance of receiving the Begum Rokeya Award as a trade union and labor rights advocate, a recognition she deemed unimaginable under the previous regime.
Prof Yunus praised Kalpana as a formidable advocate for justice, acknowledging her global respect. He reiterated his commitment to labor rights and ILO conventions, areas prioritized following the Rana Plaza tragedy.
In discussions with Dr Rubhana Rakib, a researcher at ICDDR,b, Prof Yunus touched on the challenges faced by the organization and the Rohingya community following the withdrawal of foreign aid. He assured ongoing governmental dialogues to address these issues.
The Chief Adviser also engaged with footballer Ritu Parna Chakma about the National Women's Football Team, inquiring into their living conditions, training facilities, and the integration of new players. He highlighted the team's role in inspiring young fans nationwide.
Commending Nabila Idris, the human rights award recipient, Prof Yunus lauded her steadfast determination in raising awareness about human rights. Nabila expressed her gratitude for the Chief Adviser's efforts to initiate the trial process for enforced disappearances and acknowledged the historical significance of the current state of investigations.
During the event, Prof Yunus presented his book, 'Beltoil Gramer Jorimon, O Anyannora', to the awardees. The book explores the economic challenges and lifestyles of rural women. Women and Children Affairs Adviser Sharmeen S Murshid, Principal Coordinator (SDG) and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed, and Senior Secretary of the Women and Children Affairs Mamtaz Ahmed were among the attendees.
