Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today reaffirmed the commitment to conduct national elections in the first half of February next year, ensuring a festive and peaceful environment despite potential disruptions.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus made these remarks during a meeting with representatives from seven political parties and one organization at the State Guest House Jamuna. The political entities involved in the discussions were Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), Nagorik Oikya, Gonosonghoti Andolon, Gano Odhikar Parishad, LDP, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jatiya Gano Front, and Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.
After the meeting, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, briefed reporters, quoting the Chief Adviser as saying that the election will be conducted in a joyous and inclusive atmosphere. He emphasized that this election should provide a positive experience for all voters, including those who faced difficulties in previous elections, ensuring that everyone can participate without hindrance.
Professor Yunus acknowledged potential obstacles from factions opposing the interim government's progress towards the elections. He urged vigilance against emerging challenges, reiterating the goal of transferring power to an elected government following the February polls.
He appealed for cooperation from all political parties to facilitate the elections, describing this election as crucial not just for the interim government but for the entire nation. The aspiration is to build a future Bangladesh where citizens stand confidently and manage their affairs independently.
The Chief Adviser also highlighted the necessity of maintaining peace during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations, urging political parties to ensure no disruptions occur. He stressed the importance of a peaceful atmosphere, warning against attempts to incite chaos.
Following the political meeting, Shafiqul Alam revealed that Professor Yunus met separately with Gano Odhikar Parishad leaders, including President Nurul Haque Nur's wife, Maria Akter. Professor Yunus directed Health Ministry officials to expedite arrangements for Nur's overseas treatment.
The meeting also included Law Adviser Asif Nazrul, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan. Asif Nazrul announced the formation of a judicial probe committee, led by Justice Ali Reza, with a report expected within 15 days.
