Mahmudullah, Taskin help Tigers pass 400-run mark

Despite losing two early wickets on day one of the Harare Test, Bangladesh passed the 400-run mark on day two riding on a hundred by Mahmudullah Riyad and a maiden fifty by Taskin Ahmed.

Mahmudullah, out of Test setup for more than 17 months, was called up at the last minute.

It was the fifth Test hundred for Mahmudullah. Before this match, he played a Test match back in 2020 against Pakistan.

The right-handed allrounder grabbed the chance well. He and Taskin passed 150 runs in the ninth wicket stand, which is now the highest ninth-wicket stand at the Harare Sports Club as well.

They surpassed 147 between Mohammad Wasim and Mushtaq Ahmed of Pakistan.

Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first. Saif Hassan and Najmul Hossain Shanto were dismissed early on day one.

Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque added 60 runs in the third wicket stand to recover from the early damage. But Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan fell quickly.

Mominul scored 70, and after him, Liton Das posted his Test total of 95 to keep the score afloat.

Bangladesh ended day one at 294 for eight. Two overnight batsmen— Mahmudullah and Taskin hold firm and kept scoring runs.

At the end of 114 overs, Bangladesh were batting at 420 for eight, with Mahmudullah and Taskin were unbeaten for 119 and 62 respectively.

Digital Haat and more Qurbani Cow online shops targeting Eid-ul-Azha in Bangladesh

With the digital revolution in Bangladesh, online shopping is on the rise. By doing this, people are saving time as well as getting the product of their choice while sitting at home. In today’s busy world and the Covid-19 pandemic situation, going to the market to buy and sell cattle has become a huge hazard. That is why the cattle market in Bangladesh targeting Eid-ul-Azha goes online. However, selling cattle online during the Eid season has become a norm for the last few years. But it got focused on last year due to the pandemic.

Previously, different online platforms and private organizations were involved in selling cattle online. But this year Bangladesh government has taken the initiative named ‘Digitalhaat’ for the online cattle market.

What is Digital Haat?

Digital Haat is mainly an online marketplace to buy and sell cattle online during the Eid-ul-Azha. However, it also remains active around the year. Due to the pandemic, Digital hats have been organized since last year. However, this year it is expected to get a massive hit. Last year, 27,000 cattle were sold, and this year the government has a target to sell more to sell one lac animals this year.

The e-commerce association of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Dairy Farm Association are implementing this year’s digital haat under Dhaka North City Corporation as per the directions of the Ministry of Commerce.

However, it is mainly organized by Dhaka North City Corporation, but dwellers from other areas can also access it. Apart from this, other municipalities of the country will be able to use this platform if they decide to go online. The good thing about buying cows and other cattle online is that you can save time as well as you don’t need to ‘Hasil’ either.

How does Digitalhat Work?

It works like another e-commerce site. Sellers can list their cattle with the description, which will be visible to the prospective buyers.

If you are a buyer, you can check the cattle under different categories. You can sort the animals as per individual seller and the farms and other online marketplaces. Furthermore, you can talk with the owner or the organization if you like any cattle. You will find the phone number under the seller’s name. Moreover, you will find all the related information with the advertisement.

However, if you select any cattle from any e-commerce site, you can pay online and get your cattle. The e-commerce will not get the payment until they deliver it; that is how your payment remains safe. The government will ensure it through the escrow system. Once you order and make the payment govt. Will hold it for you and release the payment after you receive the goods.

Apart from ordering cattle, you can also book a slaughtering service. From last years’ experience, online butcher booking has been arranged in this year’s market. A maximum of one thousand animals will be sacrificed in the slaughterhouse. From there, the meat will be delivered to the buyer by 26 air-conditioned vehicles.

Live animals or meat, whatever is delivered, will be priced by the seller. No separate charge can be taken from the buyer in this regard. However, the buyer will have to book the slaughtering service by July 10. E-Cab will settle any disputes between buyers and sellers.

Digital Cattle Market in Different Districts around Bangladesh

The online cattle market is getting popular in different parts of the country. Due to the lockdown, physical cattle markets might not be allowed. Hence, the online market is the only solution. With that note, many districts have been adopting online haat culture.

For example, a page called Sreepur Online Pashur Hat has already been launched under the supervision of Sreepur Upazila Nirbahi Officer following the government directives to avoid the huge gathering and risk of the haat.

District administration of Chuadanga has also taken the initiative for the online cattle market. A Facebook page named ‘Online Pashuhaat, Chuadanga’ has already been opened to buy and sell cattle online during Eid-ul-Adha 2021.

Other Non-Government Initiatives

Apart from government-monitored ‘digitalhaat,’ many e-commerce sites have also taken the initiative to sell cattle online. However, it is not new for e-commerce companies as they have been selling cattle online for the last few years.

Bikroy.com

Bikroy.com (www.bikroy.com) has been selling cows and goats for several years with a campaign called ‘Birat Haat.’ It also arranges the partner for the ‘Kurbani.’ If the buyer wants, he can get the cash on delivery or pay the price after checking the delivery.

Daraz

Daraz (https://www.daraz.com.bd/) has been selling cattle for Eid since 2016 through a campaign called ‘Gorur Hat.’ They are giving the opportunity to buy and see the live weight, color, teeth, etc., of the cows and watch the pictures as well as videos of the farms and cows.

Othoba.com

Pran-RFL Group’s e-commerce company (www.othoba.com) has been selling cattle under the title ‘Online Kurbanir Haat’ since 2020.

shooddho.com

This online organic food platform is guaranteeing the supply of organic cows raised by the farmers. They directly serve as a platform for farmers. According to the company, they market the products of farmers-fishermen-weavers on the basis of the product price and not market price. In that case, even if the market price is low, they give importance to the product price. Dividends are later shared. They are following the same policy in the case of cattle. The company has arranged to show live videos as well as pictures of the cows. Home delivery is also free.

Other online cattle markets in Bangladesh

Vendors from different parts of the country are posting pictures of their cattle on ajkerdeal.com. DesiGuru.com (www.deshigoru.com) is selling sacrificial animals online. ‘Madol’ (fb.com/madolzonebd) is arranging cattle in a healthy way during this Covid-19 situation. The organization will provide all kinds of assistance, from buying the animal to cutting the meat and delivering it home. Another company, Hexatrading (fb.com/hexatrading) is taking full responsibility for the sacrifice and preparation of the meat. They have their own animal slaughterhouse.

Lockdown locked poor’s livelihood path: BNP

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday alleged that every path of livelihood of the poor and working people have been shut by enforcing the countrywide strict lockdown in an ‘unplanned way’.

“The government’s unplanned and inhumane decision of the lockdown has stalled the lives of crores of people who live from hand to mouth,” he told a virtual press conference.

The BNP leader said, “Imposing a strict lockdown without ensuring minimum food aid and cash support for the poor is by no means can be a logical decision, and it won’t be fruitful. To implement the lockdown, its pre-conditions have to be fulfilled first.”

He also presented their party’s demands for taking five effective and coordinated steps, including the formation of a national emergency advisory committee, to contain the spread of the coronavirus across the country.

The party’s other demands include providing the needy people with adequate food and at least Tk 15,000 as one-time cast support, encouraging people to stay inside, wearing masks and maintaining health safety rules, bringing 80 percent people under vaccination through a specific roadmap, taking effective steps to manufacture vaccines in Bangladesh and ensuring proper treatment of the Covid-infected patients by increasing oxygen supplies, ICU and corona beds and necessary medical equipment.

“Although it’s too late, a national emergency advisory committee comprising health experts, all political parties, NGOs and social organisations should be formed in the country immediately,” Fakhrul said.

He said these five steps should be set as the main targets for controlling the virus. “We need to remember that the fight against Corona is a long-term war.”

The BNP leader said the government should allocate Tk 10,000 crore for helping the poor and day-labourers during the lockdown. “This is the only way to make the lockdown effective and keep the poor at home.”

Narrating the incident of ‘committing suicide’ out of hunger amid lockdown by day-labourer Din Islam in Munshiganj, Fakhrul said the cash or food aid programme should have been on the government’s priority list to help the poor and needy people to lead the normal life.

He said it seems that the Corona has come as a “blessing” for the ruling as they are indulging in misappropriation of cash and relief items allocated for the extremely poor.

The BNP leader said the finance ministry identified that the names of 1,433,000 people on the list of 50 lakh who were provided money through mobile phones are fake.

Referring to a newspaper report, he said at least two millionaires have been given relief materials in Jhenaidah.

“You know all the stories of mega corruption in mega projects…the government can now allocate money from those projects to save lives. But they’re not doing that.”

BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuk, among others, spoke at the press conference.

Euro 2020 final: Italy holds historical edge over England

Pirlo’s “Panenka.” Schillaci’s Golden Boot clincher. Another emotional goal celebration from Marco Tardelli.

The major-tournament rivalry — if it can be called that — between Italy and England has been marked by a few stand-out moments, and they all belong to the Italians.

In four meetings at either a World Cup or a European Championship, the Azzurri have won three of them and advanced via a penalty shootout in the other.

England might have home advantage in the Euro 2020 final between the teams on Sunday at Wembley Stadium but, historically, Italy has the edge.

“We know the size of the task,” England coach Gareth Southgate said. “It’s the biggest possible test we can have.”

This is no classic international rivalry. Indeed, they have only met once in a knockout match at a major tournament and that was in 2012, when Italy won 4-2 on penalties in Kyiv — after a 0-0 draw through extra time — in the latest shootout heartache for England.

It will best be remembered for a coolly taken “Panenka” penalty by stylish midfielder Andrea Pirlo midway through the shootout. England was somewhat fortunate to get that far anyway after being outplayed for large parts of the match.

That has been a theme.

The first match between England and Italy at a tournament came at Euro 1980, when Tardelli guided a near-post finish past goalkeeper Peter Shilton to earn the Azzurri a 1-0 win in their second group match.

Tardelli is best known for his screaming, fist-waving celebration after scoring Italy’s second goal in a 3-1 victory over West Germany in the 1982 World Cup final. His reaction after the winning goal against England was also emotional as he wheeled his way around the perimeter of the field before rolling onto the ground and holding his head in his hands.

In 1990, the teams met in a third-place playoff at the World Cup in Italy. It’s regarded as a match no one really wants to play, coming so soon after losses in the semifinals, but it at least gave Italy striker Salvatore Schillaci the opportunity to become the top scorer at the tournament.

And he took it, converting a penalty in the 86th minute to give Italy a 2-1 win and finish with six goals, one more than Czechoslovakia striker Tomas Skuhravy.

The only other tournament meeting was in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup and the Italians again won, with Mario Balotelli’s second-half header handing them a 2-1 victory in steamy Manaus in Brazil’s Amazonian rainforest.

Since then, there have been a pair of 1-1 draws in friendly games, none of which were played before Roberto Mancini became Italy coach in May 2018.

The overall record stands at 11 wins for Italy and eight wins for England in a total of 27 matches. Undefeated in the first eight meetings, England has only managed one win in the last seven.

Under Mancini, Italy is on a 33-match unbeaten run — a national record.

“They have been a top team for the last couple of years,” Southgate said. “We have followed their progress closely. We know the way they play — with great energy, with great style — they are always difficult to score against.”

Italy’s influence on English domestic soccer has been huge over the past decade, with three coaches — Mancini (Manchester City in 2012), Claudio Ranieri (Leicester in 2016) and Antonio Conte (Chelsea in 2017) — leading teams to Premier League titles.

Mancini ended City’s 44-year wait for a top-flight championship, but was fired a year later, just three days after a surprising loss in the FA Cup final to Wigan.

That loss came at Wembley, where Mancini is returning on Sunday in a bid to guide Italy to a second European title.

“I think Italy against England is always a great match,” said Italy midfielder Marco Verratti, who made his international debut in a 2-1 loss to England in a friendly game in Bern, Switzerland, in August 2012.

“Two great teams and nations. Both deserve to be in the final. They had a sensational tournament. We both performed well but there can only be one winner and I hope it’s us.”

Myanmar: UN expert calls for emergency coalition to end junta’s ‘reign of terror’

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, Wednesday called for the urgent formation of an “Emergency Coalition for the People of Myanmar” to stop what he described as the military junta’s “reign of terror.”

The international community is failing the people of Myanmar, he said.

Addressing the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Andrews said it was time to end “the failure of those outside of Myanmar to take measures that could help end this nightmare.”

Andrews highlighted the extreme human rights abuses committed by the junta, which he described as “crimes against humanity.”

“The junta’s military forces have murdered approximately 900 people, forcibly displaced hundreds of thousands, tortured many, including torturing people in custody to death, disappeared untold numbers, and arbitrarily detained nearly 6,000,” Andrews said.

Despite its brutality, he added, “The junta has failed to take control of the country after launching its February coup. The junta captured many levers of state power, the purse strings of Myanmar’s treasury and the administrative offices, but it has not – not even close – taken control of the nation and its people.”

“The people of Myanmar roundly view the junta as illegitimate and, indeed, a terrorist scourge set loose upon them. Now, more than ever, we must summon the courage of the people of Myanmar and choose the path of meaningful and sustained action,” Andrews said.

Andrews’ call for an Emergency Coalition for the People of Myanmar would include “nations willing to stand with the people of Myanmar through meaningful, coordinated action.”

The UN expert said a coalition of nations that are willing to work together on strong action to pressure the junta was necessary considering the paralysis that has followed the consensus decision making that has plagued the international response to date.

“The UN Security Council, Human Rights Council and General Assembly have offered statements and resolutions but the people of Myanmar need immediate action,” he told the Council in Geneva.

Andrews said, “The Emergency Coalition should significantly reduce the revenue that the junta needs to continue its reign of terror by coordinated tough targeted sanctions, including against Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise.”

“Also, it will have to outlaw the export of arms to the Myanmar military, as called for in last month’s General Assembly resolution; pursue universal jurisdiction cases and coordinate investigations against Myanmar’s senior security officials,” he added.

“The Emergency Coalition should dramatically increase humanitarian aid by working with the National Unity Government to use non-junta channels to assure that aid goes directly to the people of Myanmar. Also, it will have to work together to deny any claims of legitimacy that the junta may try to assert, such as the false claim that they are recognised by the UN ” Andrews said.

Study: Northwest heat wave impossible without climate change

The deadly heat wave that roasted the Pacific Northwest and western Canada was virtually impossible without human-caused climate change that added a few extra degrees to the record-smashing temperatures, a new quick scientific analysis found.

An international team of 27 scientists calculated that climate change increased chances of the extreme heat occurring by at least 150 times, but likely much more.

The study, not yet peer reviewed, said that before the industrial era, the region’s late June triple-digit heat was the type that would not have happened in human civilization. And even in today’s warming world, it said, the heat was a once-in-a-millennium event.

But that once-in-a-millennium event would likely occur every five to 10 years once the world warms another 1.4 degrees (0.8 degrees Celsius), said Wednesday’s study from World Weather Attribution. That much warming could be 40 or 50 years away if carbon pollution continues at its current pace, one study author said.

This type of extreme heat “would go from essentially virtually impossible to relatively commonplace,” said study co-author Gabriel Vecchi, a Princeton University climate scientist. “That is a huge change.”

The study also found that in the Pacific Northwest and Canada climate change was responsible for about 3.6 degrees (2 degrees Celsius) of the heat shock. Those few degrees make a big difference in human health, said study co-author Kristie Ebi, a professor at the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the University of Washington.

“This study is telling us climate change is killing people,” said Ebi, who endured the blistering heat in Seattle. She said it will be many months before a death toll can be calculated from June’s blast of heat but it’s likely to be hundreds or thousands. “Heat is the No. 1 weather-related killer of Americans.”

In Oregon alone, the state medical examiner on Wednesday reported 116 deaths related to the heat wave.

The team of scientists used a well-established and credible method to search for climate change’s role in extreme weather, according to the National Academy of Sciences. They logged observations of what happened and fed them into 21 computer models and ran numerous simulations. They then simulated a world without greenhouse gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas. The difference between the two scenarios is the climate change portion.

“Without climate change this event would not have happened,” said study senior author Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at the University of Oxford.

What made the Northwest heat wave so remarkable is how much hotter it was than old records and what climate models had predicted. Scientists say this hints that some kind of larger climate shift could be in play — and in places that they didn’t expect.

“Everybody is really worried about the implications of this event,” said study co-author Geert Jan van Oldenborgh, a Dutch climate scientist. “This is something that nobody saw coming, that nobody thought possible. And we feel that we do not understand heat waves as well as we thought we did. The big question for many people is: Could this also happen in a lot of places?”

The World Weather Attribution team does these quick analyses, which later get published in peer-reviewed journals. In the past, they have found similar large climate change effects in many heat waves, including ones in Europe and Siberia. But sometimes the team finds climate change wasn’t a factor, as they did in a Brazilian drought and a heat wave in India.

Six outside scientists said the quick study made sense and probably underestimated the extent of climate change’s role in the heat wave.

That’s because climate models used in the simulations usually underestimate how climate change alters the jet stream that parks “heat domes” over regions and causes some heat waves, said Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Michael Mann.

The models also underestimate how dry soil worsens heat because there is less water to evaporate, which feeds a vicious cycle of drought, said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at UCLA and the Nature Conservancy.

The study hit home for University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, who wasn’t part of the research team.

“Victoria, which is known for its mild climate, felt more like Death Valley last week,” Weaver said. “I’ve been in a lot of hot places in the world, and this was the worst I’ve ever been in.

“But you ain’t seen nothing yet,” he added. “It’s going to get a lot worse.”

CEPA to be a gamechanger for Dhaka-Delhi trade ties: Doraiswami

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Bangladesh and India will be a gamechanger for bilateral trade partnership, says Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kumar Doraiswami.

CEPA is under active discussion of both the governments, he said while addressing a virtual event on Wednesday.

High Commissioner Doraiswami highlighted Duty-Free Quota-Free market access available to Bangladesh products under SAFTA since 2011.

He said India’s vast consumer market offers enormous opportunities for the quality food products from Bangladesh and underscored the importance of linkages among trade bodies.

The High Commissioner also emphasized the importance of finalizing reciprocal arrangements with regard to food safety standards and rapid upgradation of logistics to enhance such trade.

Teen-gangs in Dhaka: How close you live to them!

From “Big Boss” to “Disco Boys”- these names stare at passersby from the walls of the capital city’s most residential areas.

These otherwise curiosity-evoking names bared their ugly teeth for the first time in 2017, catching law enforcement agencies by surprise and triggering public concern.

That year, while investigating the murder of 14-year-old Adnan Kabir, law enforcers discovered the crime was the result of a turf-war between two rival teen gangs.

Adnan, a ninth grader, was allegedly a member of a gang called ‘Nine Star’ operating in Uttara. He was attacked by members of another teen-gang ‘Disco Boys’ also based in the same upscale residential-cum-commercial township.

Since then, there has been a proliferation of teen-gangs across Uttara and other parts of the burgeoning capital city of about 20 million people.

Police and Rab estimate that around 50 ‘juvenile gangs’ are currently active in the capital. The number fluctuates depending on the anti-gang drive by the law enforcers.

The gangs — each usually having 10 to 15 boys’ members — are reportedly involved in trading drugs besides being addicted to it, police and Rab sources said. The boys are aged between 14 and 19.

Some members even carry illegal firearms and homemade weapons that they use in their turf-wars. Taking control of an area of operation is the main reason for the fight, they said.

They said the gangs are sometimes patronised by political parties to help them settle their own scores with their political rivals.

Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, RAB media wing director in 2017, said the gang culture took root in Uttara in 2001 with the rise of a short-lived group known as ‘Kankra’.

The investigators gradually found at least 15 ‘juvenile gangs’ active in Uttara area. ‘Disco Boys’ was one of them.

Over the years law enforcement agencies have discovered the existence of several other teen-gangs such as ‘Power Boys’, Nine MM Boys, Bichchhu Bahini, Don Group, Munna Group, Black Cobra apart from Nine Star and Disco Boys.

The gangs usually play a hide-and-seek game with police and Rab.

When law enforcers go hard after them, the gangs keep quiet until the field gets clear again.

The gangs earn money from their drug trading and then spend it mainly on buying their drugs. They also take to petty crimes such as snatching and robbing passersby of their money.

Both social scientists and law enforcers point to the upbringing of teenage children by their families. Also, they blame the easy access to Internet and social media exposing many children to vices.

Dr Sadeka Halim, dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Dhaka University, said so many varied contents are available on the net now such as tiktok videos, pornography and much more.

Prof Sadeka said even when they (teenagers) attend classes online, they find ways to watch content they are not supposed to.

“The adult gangs take advantage of this,” she said, adding, “Parents need to be more aware so that their children don’t get involved in crimes. This is also the responsibility of society.”

Khandaker Al Moin, director of legal and media wing of the Rab Headquarters said society, families and educational institutions all have responsibility for keeping the children away from crimes.

“We need to keep track of where our children go, who they associate with, and what they do. Overall, everyone must work together to prevent this,” he added.

Police and Rab conduct drives against ‘teen aged gangs’ members round the year when they get information of their activities in the capital.

Police have conducted a 9-day special simultaneous drives from January 26 this year in Hatirjheel area, a popular recreational spot for residents and ironically also a hunting ground of the gangsters.

During the drive, which continued till February 3, the police detained around 400 teenagers. As most of them were minors, they were handed over to their respective parents on condition that they (parents) will report the kids’ progress to police once a week.

Police arrested five members of two ‘teen-gangs’ known as ‘Chan Jadu Group’ and ‘Bandage Group’from Mugda on June 22 last.

Md Abdul Ahad, Deputy Commissioner (Motijheel zone) of the DMP, told UNB that two teen-gangs are active in Motijheel area.

Police have already prepared a list of those involved in gang crimes. The gangs commit crimes such as robberies, muggings, drug abuse, eve-teasing, gambling and extortion. “Drives are on to arrest the gang members,” he said.

Rab personnel arrested 16 members of a ‘teen-gang’ from different parts of Hazaribagh and Darus Salam areas on June 21 last. They were members of two local teen gangs — ‘Don Group’ and ‘Munna Group’.

They have long been involved in many criminal activities, including robberies, muggings, drug abuse, eve-teasing and extortion.

DSCC drive: Aedes larvae found in 5 buildings including DOM-INNO’s

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Thursday found Aedes mosquito larvae in five buildings including an under-construction building of real estate developer DOM-INNO, during a drive.

After visiting 30 houses and under-construction buildings, two DSCC mobile court teams fined Tk 4,75000 in six cases after finding a favourable environment for Aedes mosquito breeding at five of them.

The drive was led by Executive Magistrate AH Irfan Uddin Ahmed and Tanjila Kabir Tropa in city’s Kadamtala, Basabo school, Hirajhil Goli, WASA road, Naya Paltan and Shanti Nagar areas.

Executive Magistrate Tanjila Kabir Tropa said, “I’ve fined earlier the same under construction building owned by DOM-INNO in April this year with Tk 20,000 after finding Aedes Larvae breeding inside it.”

The same building was fined by Executive Magistrate AH Irfan Uddin Ahmed in 2019 with Tk 1 lakh for the same reason yet it still remained a breeding place for Aedes mosquito, she said.

Verdict

Italy vs England final will be held at the Wembley Stadium in London, and the football world is anticipating an exciting contest between these two teams. England will get some advantage because of their home condition and they are a strong contender to win their first European Championship. On the other side, Italy haven’t won a EURO tournament since 1968, so they’ll go all out to win the coveted championship. Both teams are in fantastic form right now and have been very consistent throughout the tournament. Hopefully, the deserving team will win the trophy in the end.

Children’s fight over property delays 88-yr-old’s funeral in Goalanda

Property disputes between blood relations are not uncommon in Bangladesh.

But the same reached a new low on Wednesday when an 88-year-old man’s burial was delayed by over 27 hours as his five children slugged it out over the partition of their ancestral land in Dakkhin Pachuria Ambalpur village of Goalanda upazila.

Yeasin Molla, a farmer of the village, died at a hospital on Tuesday. His children brought their dead father back home that day only but soon started fighting over their family property and wealth as the body lay outside.

Local people soon alerted the Debgram Union chairman and all the children — Bablu, Fulbaru, Rabeya, Mamtaz and Rahman — were called to the house of the upazila chairman on Wednesday.

After discussions, a settlement was reached. But the burial got delayed over allegations of foul play. The body was taken to the Rajbari Hospital morgue around 2 pm on Wednesday for an autopsy.

Finally, after 27 hours, Yeasin was laid to eternal rest.

According to the other four children, Yeasin lived with Rahman, his youngest son. “And Rahman had forced Yeasin to bequeath the entire family property in his name.”

A case was already filed at Rajbari District court, and Yeasin and his five children were all supposed to appear before the judge on Monday.

However, Yeasin fell sick on Monday and couldn’t appear in the case, prompting the other children to level allegations of foul play against Rahman. They alleged that Rahman gave sedatives to their father.

However, Rahman refuted the allegations. “On Friday, my father fell sick and I took him to a private clinic where doctors prescribed some test and medicines. On Tuesday, my father’s condition deteriorated and the authorities of Goalanda Health Complex declared him dead on arrival.”

Hafizul Islam, chairman of Debgram Union, said l, “The five children have been locked in a property dispute for long.”

Mizanur Rahman Akond, sub-inspector at Goalanda Ghat Police Station, said the body was taken to the local hospital morgue for an autopsy “after we received a complaint of foul play”.
