Case Filed After Seven Years for 2018 Polling Center Shooting

Sundarganj: After seven years, a case has been filed with Sundarganj police regarding a shooting incident during the last parliamentary election held in 2018. Md. Ayub Ali, from Uttar Poran village in Shantiram Union of Sundarganj upazila, filed the case on Thursday, accusing local Union Parishad Chairman ABM Mizanur Rahman and Jatiya Party Union Unit President Shariful Islam Shahin of shooting and injuring his son, Shahin Miah, 32, at a polling center in the union.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the case documents state that on December 30, 2018, leaders and activists of the Awami League and Jatiya Party allegedly attacked the Poran Govt. Primary School polling center. This was reportedly part of a plan to ensure the victory of Jatiyo Party candidate Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary at the center and in the constituency. The attackers allegedly forced entry into the polling center and obstructed voters from exercising their right to vote.



During the incident, Shariful Islam is accused of firing at Shahin, causing critical injuries. Shahin was initially treated at Sundarganj Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced care. The total cost of Shahin’s treatment amounted to Taka 15 lakh, but despite the medical efforts, he has been left permanently disabled.



Abdul Hakim Azad, the Officer-in-Charge of Sundarganj Thana, has confirmed the filing of the case and stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the accused individuals.
