Chattogram:The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has discovered approximately 160 to 170 tonnes of cardamom stored by various businesses in a warehouse in Khatunganj, Chattogram. This revelation has sparked concerns about potential stockpiling and its impact on the spice's availability in the market.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during a recent operation, DNCRP officials revealed that one business had sold only half a tonne of cardamom out of the 15 tonnes stored almost 11 months ago. Another business presented sales receipts for 30 tonnes but had not yet delivered the products.

Hossain Corporation was fined Tk 50,000 for allegedly attempting to create artificial shortages and increase prices by stockpiling cardamom. Additionally, Arafat Trading faced a Tk 40,000 fine for improperly storing imported cumin without production and expiry dates.

The investigation showed that Hossain Corporation had been storing 15 tonnes of cardamom at Bimal Babu's warehouse since November 2025, selling only a fraction of it. This prolonged storage has raised suspicions of price manipulation as the expiry date approaches. Prime Trading, another company, had amassed 47 tonnes of cardamom over two months but failed to complete product deliveries despite presenting sales receipts.

The DNCRP has summoned Prime Trading to provide purchase records and other documents next Sunday, with further legal action pending review of their explanations. Traders were advised against excessive stockpiling and were reminded to maintain accurate pricing and measurements, in addition to being required to post updated price lists visibly.

The DNCRP assured continued market monitoring to maintain fair pricing and ensure the consistent supply of essential goods.
