Manikganj: Lawmaker for Manikganj-1 constituency SA Jinnah Kabir today inaugurated a canal re-excavation programme at Shibalaya upazila. At the inaugural ceremony, the lawmaker highlighted its role in job creation for poor women and improving agricultural productivity.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, MP Jinnah noted that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman initiated canal excavation and re-excavation efforts across the country, starting with the Kashadaha canal in Manikganj. He added that the current government has continued similar initiatives nationwide to enhance irrigation and mitigate waterlogging.
Jinnah mentioned that the 4.5-kilometre-long Amdala canal will be re-excavated under the EGPD project for the 2025-26 financial year. Under this scheme, each participating poor woman worker will receive Tk 500 per day for 40 days, providing temporary income support to unemployed women in the area.
Local beneficiaries expressed satisfaction over the employment opportunity, while farmers of the region anticipate improved irrigation facilities and reduced waterlogging upon the canal’s completion. The programme was presided over by Shibalaya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Monisha Rani Karmaker. Project Implementation Officer Tahmina Akter, Ulail Union Parishad Chairman Mohammad Anisur Rahman, and District Jubo Dal Convenor Mostaque Ahmed Dipu were also present at the event.
