Kurigram: Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, MP, announced that the canal excavation programme is poised to revolutionize the water management system in Bangladesh. He made this statement during the inauguration of the re-excavation work of a canal from Dasherhat Chhara to the AC Land office connection point at Araji Palashbari mouza under Holokhana union, as stated in a ministry press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dulu highlighted the historic significance of the canal excavation programme, initially launched by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in 1977. The programme, designed to increase agricultural production and expand irrigation facilities, had previously enabled Bangladesh to export rice for the first time. The BNP has relaunched the initiative to continue Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman's vision.
Dulu detailed the scope of the renewed programme, which involves the excavation of approximately 20,000 kilometers of rivers, canals, and water reservoirs over the next five years. He emphasized the multidimensional impact of the programme, stating that enhanced irrigation technology could boost agricultural productivity, reduce farmers' costs, and significantly increase crop production.
He also noted that maintaining water levels in canals year-round could facilitate various rural economic activities, such as fish farming and duck rearing, thereby creating new employment opportunities for rural youths. Additionally, Dulu pointed out that the re-excavation of canals would be instrumental in addressing floods and waterlogging issues.
The inauguration event was attended by Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Annapurna Debnath, officials from the district administration, political leaders, and a large gathering of local residents. The canal excavation initiative is funded through the Employment Generation Programme for the Poorest (EGPP).
