Sunamganj: A canal excavation programme has been inaugurated at Aktapara Baro Haor under Dargapasha Union in Shantiganj Upazila of the district. Lawmaker from Sunamganj-3 constituency, Mohammad Koysor Ahmed, led the inauguration of the programme on Friday afternoon. The event was attended by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shahjahan, Project Implementation Officer Jahangir Alam, and Dargapasha Union Parishad Chairman Sufi Mia, among others.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the lawmaker highlighted the origins of the canal excavation programme, attributing its introduction to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for the welfare of farmers. He noted that the current Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government is continuing this initiative, which is aimed at restoring lost canals and rivers across the country. The restoration is expected to benefit both agriculture and fisheries sectors.
The lawmaker also addressed the challenges associated with the excavation process, pointing out that many canals have been encroached upon and will need to be recovered before any excavation can occur.
