Dinajpur: State Minister for Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad today emphasized the importance of excavating canals, rivers, and water reservoirs to restore the country’s natural biodiversity. He highlighted the need for such initiatives during the inauguration of the re-excavation work of the Singzani Canal.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister referenced the historical context of canal excavation programs initiated by former President Ziaur Rahman. These programs aimed not only at protecting biodiversity but also at ensuring food security. However, he criticized the previous Sheikh Hasina-led government for failing to maintain these water bodies, which resulted in a loss of navigability and ecological balance.

The minister detailed the current efforts under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who officially launched a nationwide canal excavation campaign in Dinajpur on March 16. The re-excavation work on the Singzani Canal in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha is part of this broader initiative.

During the event, Minister Azad instructed officials to execute the excavation work efficiently and within the set timeframe to meet the campaign’s objectives. The ceremony was attended by local lawmaker Shameem Kaisar Lingkon and Gaibandha district BNP president Professor Dr. Moynul Hasan Sadik.
