Baku: Chief Adviser Professor Yunus today urged Bangladesh officials, NGO representatives, and civil society leaders to intensify their efforts in highlighting the country's climate crisis at the COP-29 in Baku. He made this appeal shortly after arriving in Azerbaijan's capital to lead Bangladesh's delegation at the annual UN Climate Change Conference, as stated in a message received. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus emphasized the importance of incorporating Bangladesh's concerns and demands into the final declaration of COP-29. He addressed the Bangladesh delegation during a coordination meeting at a hotel in Baku, underscoring the nation's strategic priorities for the conference. Environment Secretary Farhina Ahmed provided a briefing on Bangladesh's stance on several key issues of the conference. She revealed that Bangladesh has formed nine teams to negotiate across major areas, including climate finance, loss and mitigation, and just transition and adaptation mechanisms. She al so noted that 29 NGOs and civil society groups from Bangladesh are participating in COP-29. Despite assurances from affluent countries in the Global North, Bangladesh has so far received $344 million in grants and $250 million in credit as climate finance. The Chief Adviser is scheduled to attend the main summit of COP-29 tomorrow and will participate in at least three significant events.
