Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed the authorities concerned to investigate the devastating fire in a garment factory and chemical warehouse at Shialbari in the city's Mirpur area that has so far claimed 16 lives and injured several others.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Adviser, who is currently in Rome, was informed about the tragic fire in Mirpur and immediately asked the authorities to investigate the incident. He also expressed shock over the fatalities and injuries caused by the fire, as conveyed by Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam during a media briefing in Rome.
"We stand beside the affected families," Shafiqul quoted Professor Yunus as saying. The Chief Adviser further emphasized the government's commitment to support the victims' families during this tragic time.
Highlighting previous occurrences of similar fire incidents in chemical factories in Bangladesh, Shafiqul noted, "Despite our utmost efforts, it has been noticed that some people set up such factories illegally." This raises concerns about the legality and safety measures in place at such establishments.
The ongoing investigation aims to verify whether the garment factory and chemical warehouse had valid licenses and the necessary fire safety clearance from the Fire Service and Civil Defence Department. Following the investigation, appropriate actions will be taken against those responsible for any negligence or illegal activities related to the establishments involved in the incident.
