Dhaka:Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Director and Chief Editor Kader Gani Chowdhury has urged journalists to practice truthful and objective journalism, emphasizing the importance of upholding truth and honesty while remaining accountable to the public.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chowdhury highlighted that competition has become a significant challenge in journalism, urging journalists to prioritize truth over speed when delivering news. He made these remarks as the chief guest at an exchange of views with the national news agency's district correspondents at the BSS office.
Chowdhury expressed concern that journalists, in their rush to publish news, often make mistakes, which can harm both journalism and the country's stability. He stressed the necessity for journalists to verify information through multiple reliable sources before publication.
He pointed out the increasing spread of false information through Artificial Intelligence (AI), noting that such misinformation is often so convincingly presented that it can mislead ordinary readers or viewers. He emphasized that journalists must always verify their sources and investigate the truth, distinguishing their role from that of ordinary individuals.
Chowdhury criticized media outlets for publishing misleading reports in their haste to break news, citing an instance where some channels reported the death of journalist Ataus Samad prematurely. He described journalism as a pursuit of truth, asserting that the fundamental principle is never to compromise with falsehood.
Addressing the BSS district correspondents, Chowdhury encouraged them to restore the agency's esteemed reputation through quality journalism. He acknowledged the contribution of BSS in publishing informative reports frequently used by various media outlets nationwide and urged correspondents to highlight the country's heritage through their reports.
Chowdhury also addressed the financial struggles of district correspondents, mentioning his recent discussions with authorities about increasing their salaries, and expressed hope for a positive outcome.
The meeting was moderated by BSS Chief Reporter (English) G. M. Rajib Hossain, with contributions from BSS Managing Editor Md. Fazlul Huq and other senior editors who provided guidance to the district correspondents. BSS City Editor Harun Al Nasif and several other key figures were also present.
