Dhaka:The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) is set to introduce licensed agents to promote mutual funds, with the goal of expanding investment opportunities and increasing retail investor participation in the capital market, as stated by its Chairman Masud Khan.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the BSEC is also working on reforms to the initial public offering (IPO) policy, creating rules for direct listings, and introducing new investment products. These initiatives, announced during a seminar at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) Tower in Nikunja, are part of efforts to develop and deepen the capital market.
The draft of the reformed IPO policy is expected to be published soon for public feedback. The event, marking "World Investor Week 2026," was organized by the DSE and the DSE Brokers Association of Bangladesh (DBA).
Masud Khan highlighted that the introduction of licensed agents for mutual funds would involve short-term training and certification provided by the Bangladesh Institute of Capital Market (BICM). The system aims to enhance the role of mutual funds, similar to the model in India, thereby increasing public participation.
The IPO policy reform seeks to streamline the listing process for new companies, making it more effective and investor-friendly. Public opinion will be sought once the draft is published.
Emphasizing investor protection, Masud advised a thorough review of financial statements and fundamentals before investing in IPOs, while cautioning against decisions based on unrealistic profit promises.
The BSEC chairman called for collaboration among regulators, stock exchanges, media, and investors to ensure transparency and build confidence in the market. The overall goal is to make the capital market more effective and sustainable through alternative investment avenues and deeper market development.
