Bangladesh securities and exchange commission (bsec): today warned all concerned against publishing or circulating false and misleading news and statements in the name of its chairman, saying such activities could create confusion among investors and disrupt the normal environment of the capital market.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the securities regulator issued a press release addressing a recent report published in various media outlets under the headline “Karosajite shudhu jorimana noy, hobe faujdari mamla” (Market manipulation will not only draw fines, but also criminal cases). This report attributed numerous remarks to BSEC Chairman Masud Khan on topics including market manipulation, insider trading, and technology-based market surveillance.
The BSEC clarified that the chairman had not given any interview or made any statement to the media on these issues. Therefore, the statements published or quoted in those reports should not be considered as statements of the BSEC chairman.
The com
mission expressed concern over the circulation of these reports and social media posts, especially where statements attributed to the BSEC chairman are used to influence public opinion and investors. Such activities could cause confusion among investors and lead to misinformation.
BSEC urged media outlets, journalists, social-media users, and other parties to verify information before publishing or circulating any statement, decision, or position attributed to the commission or its chairman. The regulator emphasized the importance of maintaining professional standards and verifying the authenticity of information concerning the chairman or the commission.
The commission advised relying on information from the commission’s official website, approved press releases, and the commission’s spokesperson for important decisions, directives, policy positions, and other significant statements.
Furthermore, BSEC stated that it is considering legal action against attempts to create false, misleading, or baseless inf
ormation in the name of the BSEC chairman or the commission, aimed at misleading the public or disturbing the normal environment of the capital market. The BSEC also called for responsible and fact-based journalism in reporting on the capital market and urged investors to verify the source and authenticity of information circulated through social media before making investment decisions.
