Chattogram: Shipping Advisor Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain has announced that the government has decided to acquire three new ocean-going vessels for the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC). This initiative aims to increase revenue and enhance the capacity of the state-owned BSC, as stated during his inspection of ship recycling activities at KSRM Ship-breaking Yard in Sitakunda.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Shipping Advisor highlighted that 14 ship-breaking yards in Chattogram have already secured the Green Shipyard Certificate, aligning with the Hong Kong Convention for safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships. He also mentioned that more shipyards are in the process of obtaining certification.
Sakhawat Hossain warned that any ship-breaking yard failing to meet environmental and safety standards would face closure. He acknowledged that several yards are still working towards full compliance with international regulations. The government is committed to providing support to help these yards achieve compliance and improve their standards.
