Rangpur: Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) celebrated Independence and National Day-2026 with due dignity and daylong colorful programmes on Thursday. The day’s celebration began in the morning with the hoisting of the national flag by Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali at sunrise.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Vice-chancellor inaugurated and led a colorful independence procession participated by teachers, students, officers, and employees from various departments, offices, residential halls, and institutes of the university. The procession started from the South Gate of the Administrative Building, went around Shaheed Abu Sayeed Square, circled the main roads of the campus, and ended in front of the Independence Memorial. Later, the Vice-chancellor paid tribute to the brave martyrs of the great liberation war at the university’s Independence Memorial, followed by wreath-laying by various faculties, departments, residential halls, institutes, and organizations.
A discussion meeting was organized on the third floor of the cafeteria to mark the day, with Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali as the chief guest. The event was chaired by Professor Dr Md Tajul Islam, Convener of the university’s Great Independence and National Day-2026 Celebration Committee. Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology Dr Md Moniruzzaman spoke as the main discussant. The Vice-chancellor highlighted the significance of March 26, 1971, when independent Bangladesh emerged. He paid tribute to the martyrs and mentioned that ‘Martyred President Ziaur Rahman declared independence, inspiring the Bengali nation to achieve it through a nine-month armed struggle.’
Assistant Director of the Public Relations, Information and Publication Division of BRUR Md Ehteramul Huq moderated the programme, which also saw addresses by Registrar (Additional Duty) and Proctor Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman, Additional Registrar (International Affairs) Agriculturist Khandaker Golam Mostafa, Institute of Research Excellence Officer Dr Md Rokunuzzaman, Deputy Registrar of Establishment Branch Md Tariqul Islam, and President of BRUR Alumni Association SM Shahedul Alam Sagar. The day’s observances included doa and milad mahfil at the university’s Central Mosque after Asr prayers, and in the afternoon, a tree plantation programme was held at the BRUR campus under the initiative of Rangpur City Corporation Administrator Advocate Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury Don and Visionary Youth Society, Rangpur.
