Dhaka: The administration of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) has expressed deep concern and condemnation over a comment made by a university teacher regarding an enlightened figure like Begum Rokeya.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a teacher from the Department of Physics at Rajshahi University recently made a ‘kafir-murtad’ comment on social media about Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, a pioneer of women’s awakening and social reform. This comment has sparked outrage among the BRUR community. The university released a statement denouncing the remarks, labeling them as an irresponsible attempt to undermine the women’s liberation movement.

Begum Rokeya’s contributions to the awakening of Bengali women, the spread of women’s education, and the fight against discrimination are well-documented. She dedicated her life to combating societal backwardness, superstitions, child marriage, the dowry system, and the subordinate status of women. Her works, including ‘Motichur,’ ‘Sultana’s Dream,’ ‘Aborhadbasini,’ and ‘Padmarag,’ emphasize reason, progress, free thought, and a scientific mindset as tools for humanity and social progress.

The BRUR release highlighted that Rokeya’s thoughts and philosophy were not against Islam or fundamental religious principles. She advocated for women’s rights within the framework of Islamic teachings and was a “practicing Muslim,” as noted by her biographers. Calling such a luminary a ‘murtad’ or ‘kafir’ is not only insulting but also an attempt to instill societal hatred and question the achievements of women. Such actions are deemed punishable under domestic law.

BRUR, named in honor of Begum Rokeya’s ideals, is dedicated to advancing women and building a discrimination-free society through education, research, and open knowledge. The university annually observes ‘Rokeya Day’ with great respect, promoting her ideals both domestically and internationally. BRUR is committed to realizing her vision of women’s development, human values, and a progressive society.

The BRUR administration has called on the government and the Bangladesh University Grants Commission to investigate the incident thoroughly and take necessary actions. The university expects all parties to play a responsible role in maintaining the quality and dignity of the higher education system and ensuring responsible conduct within academia. The release emphasized that setting a proper example will discourage such unwanted comments in the future.
