Gazipur: Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) today organised a seminar titled “Nitrogen Scenario in South Asian Agriculture: Losses, Use Efficiency and Feasibility of Halving N Wastage” at its auditorium in Gazipur. The event centered on addressing nitrogen management, a key challenge for sustainable agriculture in Bangladesh and the broader South Asian region.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the seminar was presided over by Dr Md Monowar Karim Khan, president of the Soil Science Society of Bangladesh. The discussions featured prominent figures such as Prof Dr GKM Mustafizur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU), BRRI Director General Dr Md Rafiqul Islam, renowned soil scientist Dr Md Shahidul Islam, Prof Dr M Jahiruddin, and BRRI Director Dr Aminul Islam. Dr Md Mizanur Rahman, a professor from the Soil Science Department at GAU, presented the keynote paper.
The seminar saw participation from heads of various research divisions and regional stations of BRRI, along with scientists, researchers, academics, and members of the Soil Science Society of Bangladesh. In his keynote presentation, Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman elaborated on the current state of nitrogen use and its inefficiencies in South Asian agriculture, highlighting environmental and economic impacts.
He emphasized the importance of improving nitrogen-use efficiency through technologies and practices such as slow-release fertilisers, organic amendments, alternate wetting and drying irrigation, and nano urea. Participants at the seminar committed to enhancing cooperation and research to minimize nitrogen wastage, improve nutrient-use efficiency, and safeguard the environment, aiming towards sustainable agriculture and food security in South Asia.
