Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that the decision to advance the timeline for the national election, following a meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, signifies a positive development for the country’s democracy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the highly anticipated meeting between the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London has marked a pivotal moment for the nation. The two-hour discussion concluded with a decision to reschedule the national parliamentary election to February 2026. Mirza Fakhrul shared these insights with journalists at the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
Fakhrul highlighted that a joint declaration was made immediately after the meeting, indicating that the discussions were conducted in a cordial and pleasant atmosphere, with the national election being a major topic. He noted that Tarique Rahman’s proposal to bring the election forward received consent from the Chief Adviser, moving the date from April to mid-February next year.
The BNP secretary general acknowledged the prevailing uncertainty and expressed how this meeting showcased the ability of Bangladesh’s leaders to unite and provide direction in critical times. He conveyed that Tarique Rahman had reached out to him post-meeting, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the past 15 years for democracy.
Fakhrul further shared that Tarique Rahman expressed gratitude towards his mother, Khaleda Zia, for her guidance. He also extended his appreciation to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus for his prudent approach in inviting Tarique Rahman to the meeting, which has resolved uncertainties and fostered hope for the nation’s future.
