Dhaka: Chief Justice of the National High Court of Brazil (STJ), Antonio Herman Benjamin, held a significant meeting today with Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser, at the Forest Department in Agargaon. The meeting was also attended by the Brazilian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Paulo Fernando Dias Feres, as announced in a ministry press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the discussions centered around enhancing environmental governance and judicial cooperation to tackle pressing issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable forest management. Justice Benjamin, renowned globally for his expertise in environmental law, shared insights on Brazil's legal frameworks aimed at forest protection and climate justice.
Adviser Rizwana responded by highlighting Bangladesh's efforts in conserving natural resources, addressing plastic pollution, and preserving biodiversity in sensitive ecological zones like the Sundarbans and Jaflong. Both parties emphasized their countries' shared dedication to international environmental agreements and the importance of judicial activism in enforcing environmental laws to ensure sustainable development.
The meeting also explored the role of youth and communities in building climate resilience, aligning with Bangladesh's efforts to involve local stakeholders in conservation strategies. Justice Benjamin praised Bangladesh's proactive approach to environmental challenges and proposed the idea of organizing a Judges' Conference focusing on environmental and forest protection. Adviser Rizwana expressed her willingness to facilitate such a pivotal conference.
Ambassador Paulo Fernando Dias Feres reaffirmed Brazil's readiness to collaborate with Bangladesh on mutual environmental concerns, particularly in combating deforestation.
