Dhaka: The BNP Parliamentary Party (BPP) on Tuesday unanimously elected party Chairman Tarique Rahman as the Leader of the House, setting the stage for him to form the new government as Prime Minister. The announcement was made by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir following a meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the ministers are scheduled to take their oath at the South Plaza of Parliament at 4pm. Speaking to reporters, Fakhrul described the event as a significant moment, stating that the country has finally secured a parliament through a credible election after a long period marked by challenges to democracy.

Fakhrul noted that with a majority in parliament, the election of Tarique Rahman as the leader of the parliamentary party is a promising development. He expressed hope that the country would progress considerably under Tarique’s leadership. The meeting also resulted in a decision that BNP MPs will not accept any duty-free cars or government plots.

Prior to the meeting, the newly elected BNP MPs were sworn in at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin administering the oath. The 13th parliamentary election, held on February 12, saw BNP securing 209 out of the 297 declared seats, while other parties and independent candidates filled the remaining positions.

On Monday, Tarique Rahman retained his seat in Dhaka-17 and vacated the Bogura-6 seat, necessitating a by-election in the constituency.
