Mymensingh: The bodies of two madrasa students, who went missing after a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra River in Gafargaon upazila, were recovered from the river in Pakundia upazila. The recovery took place this morning, 22 hours after the incident.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the deceased students were Abir, 6, son of Habib Mia, and Zubayed, 6, son of Mumtaz Uddin. Both were residents of the Charalgi area under Pakundia upazila and first-grade students at a local Dakhil Madrasa. Family members found the bodies in the Banshia area of Tangab union, Pakundia upazila, around 7:00 am, as confirmed by the police.
Eyewitnesses and local sources reported that nine students had boarded a small boat around 9:30 am on Tuesday to cross the Brahmaputra River from Charalgi area to attend their madrasa. The boat capsized near Datta Bazar in Gafargaon upazila, preventing them from reaching the other side. While six students swam to safety, three went missing. On Tuesday afternoon, a Fire Service diving team recovered the body of one missing student, Shapla Akter, 15.
The two remaining bodies were discovered approximately two kilometers downstream from where the capsize occurred. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gafargaon Police Station Ferdous Alam confirmed the recovery of the bodies.
