Dhaka: Social Welfare Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain has emphasized that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has a legacy of resisting autocracy rather than compromising or evading challenges. He articulated that BNP is committed to serving the people and safeguarding national sovereignty, asserting that unity among the populace can thwart any conspiracies against the nation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Zahid shared these insights while addressing a gathering at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Dhaka. The event was organized to commemorate the 6th death anniversary of Shafiul Bari Babu, the former president of Swechchhasebak Dal. The ceremony saw participation from prominent figures, including State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku and Babu's widow, Member of Parliament Beethika Binte Hossain, with Member of Parliament Abul Khayer Bhuiyan presiding over the proceedings.
Dr Zahid urged attendees to avoid actions that might jeopardize the nation's stability by inciting unnecessary agitation, which could pave the way for authoritarian rule. Reflecting on Shafiul Bari Babu's contributions, he described him as a paragon of honesty, dedication, and responsibility within the party.
Sultan Salauddin Tuku, another key speaker at the event, reminisced about his close ideological ties with Babu, despite the absence of a familial relationship. He recounted their shared experiences during a 17-year anti-fascist movement, underscoring their solidarity in the struggle for democratic principles.
