Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized that the BNP’s objective in the forthcoming parliamentary elections is to restore the fundamental rights of the people. He expressed confidence that democracy would be reinstated in the country through the February elections.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Amir Khasru highlighted the ongoing struggle to achieve a long-awaited victory by winning the elections and establishing a government that is both responsible and accountable to the people. He stated that this reflects the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people and expressed hope that the BNP will succeed in restoring democratic rights through the upcoming polls.

The remarks were made during an event commemorating the 45th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Krishak Dal, where Amir Khasru paid homage at the mausoleum of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He asserted that only a government elected by the people can effectively tackle the longstanding crises facing the nation.

Amir Khasru stressed that political change is a timely demand, with the main public desire being the establishment of a democratic environment and the opportunity to vote in a celebratory manner. He noted the significance of the upcoming elections for both the BNP and the citizens of Bangladesh, emphasizing the need to ensure political, economic, social, and cultural rights.

He also mentioned the BNP’s ambition to foster a new political culture in the country, grounded in nationalist principles, aimed at creating a peaceful and inclusive nation. This, he said, requires tolerance and mutual respect despite differences.

Furthermore, Amir Khasru spoke about the broader struggle for future emancipation, encompassing not just political freedom but also economic liberation, social rights, the right to vote, and the rule of law. He expressed readiness for politics that would deliver the benefits of Bangladesh’s development to every citizen, under the prospective leadership of Tarique Rahman.

The BNP leader recounted the party’s 16-year struggle under the leadership of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to establish democracy. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by thousands of leaders and activists who have faced disappearances, murders, incarcerations, and other hardships in the pursuit of restoring democracy.
