Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan, one of the BNP lawmakers who has recently resigned from the 11th parliament, has resigned from all his posts within the party, including the Chairperson’s Advisory Council.
Abdus Sattar, a five-time lawmaker, sent his resignation letter to the party chairperson’s office on Thursday night, he told UNB on Saturday.
“I resigned due to personal reasons,” he said, on being pushed to reveal his real reason for effectively retiring from politics.
Following a slight hesitation, he added: “Now I’ve come to realise from the party’s activities that it doesn’t need me anymore. As I’m growing old, I’ve left with honour. Nothing else.”

Sattar, who says he is 84, was first elected MP as an independent from Brahmanbaria-1 in 1979, during BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s tenure after his failure to secure a party ticket. He was the founding vice-chairman of the party’s Brahmanbaria unit at that time, and worked as the president of Brahmanbaria BNP for 28 years.
A lawyer by profession, Abdus Sattar won the parliamentary election to Brahmanbaria-1 four more times as the BNP candidate – in 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2018.
Sattar was also a state minister during the BNP-led government of 2001-06.
Earlier on December 11, he resigned from the parliament along with other lawmakers as per the party’s decision.
“I worked for the BNP for a long time and always followed party decisions,” he said.
