Dhaka: The BNP standing committee, the ruling party's highest policymaking body, convened a meeting as preparations for the upcoming presidential election gather pace. The meeting, which began at 8:00pm, took place at the BNP chairman's political office in Dhaka's Gulshan area, chaired by Tarique Rahman, as confirmed by PM's Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony.
According to United News of Bangladesh, prominent BNP standing committee members, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hassan Mahmood, Selima Rahman, and AZM Zahid Hossain, attended the meeting. Discussions reportedly centered on selecting a BNP candidate for the presidential election, alongside various organizational matters.
Following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin as president on July 24, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the role of acting president. In line with Article 123(2) of the Constitution, a presidential election must be conducted within 90 days of a vacancy due to resignation. The president is elected by members of Parliament for a five-year term, with eligibility criteria stipulating candidates must be at least thirty-five years old, qualify for parliamentary election, and not have been impeached from the presidency under the Constitution.
