Chattogram: A local BNP leader and his mother sustained bullet injuries when a group of armed miscreants entered their house in Ward No. 2 of Sarafbhata Union at around 8:30 pm on Sunday and opened fire indiscriminately.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the injured BNP leader is Engineer Osman Gani, 42, Sarafbhata Union BNP General Secretary of Rangunia Upazila of the district. His mother Achia Begum, 70, and his father Rashid Ahmed also sustained injuries during the armed attack, police and locals said.
The Officer-in-Charge of South Rangunia Police Station, Md. Hilal Uddin Ahmed, reported that the incident took place at Ganjam Ali Sarkar’s house in Ward No. 2 of Sarafbhata Union at around 8:30 pm on Sunday. The families of the injured stated that four armed miscreants entered their house at night and started firing indiscriminately.
Engineer Osman was shot in the hand and stomach during the attack. When his mother, Achia Begum, tried to protect her son, she was shot in both legs. Osman’s father, Rashid Ahmed, was also beaten and injured by the attackers. Local residents rushed to the spot to rescue them and sent them to the Rangunia Upazila Health Complex for their primary treatment.
Later, Osman Gani was transferred to a private hospital in Chattogram city due to the critical nature of his condition. His parents received treatment at the Upazila Health Complex and are now stable, confirmed the attending doctor.
BNP leader Adv. Kamal Hossain mentioned that Osman Gani sustained multiple shrapnel bullet wounds, with his stomach being the most severe. He also suffered damage to one of his hands and a weapon injury on his spine. The incident caused tension and panic in the area, with local BNP leaders strongly condemning the attack and calling for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
OC Md. Hilal Uddin Ahmed of South Rangunia Police Station stated that the police are actively pursuing the culprits and investigating the motive behind the act to maintain law and order in the region.
