Dinajpur: BNP has stood by a newborn girl, abandoned at the pediatric ward of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital by an unidentified couple in their 50s with a note describing them as ‘victim of circumstance’.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a BNP statement revealed that members of its Legal Assistance Cell for Oppressed Women and Children and Health Support Cell for Oppressed Women and Children visited the hospital. They assured the authorities of their full cooperation in providing any necessary support for the newborn.

Reports indicate that a couple in their 50s brought the infant to the pediatric ward on the fourth floor for treatment, identifying themselves as the baby’s maternal grandparents. They left the hospital under the pretense that the mother of the girl was coming from downstairs. A note left with the infant, apparently written by the child’s mother, described her as an ill-fated woman and pleaded for someone to take the baby, stating they were victims of circumstance.

The note also mentioned that the baby was born on November 4, 2025, and indicated that a bag left with the baby contained some medicines for her. The BNP statement added that the two cells were established under the directives of BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, in response to rising incidents of violence against women and children across the country since March this year.

Health Support Cell for Oppressed Women and Children central coordinator and BNP’s Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam had earlier contacted the principal and director of the hospital, Professor Dr. Sheikh Sadeq Ali and Dr. Fazlul Rahman. He requested them to ensure the baby’s best medical treatment and protection and, on behalf of Tarique Rahman, expressed gratitude to the hospital authority for their care of the infant.

Members of the two cells, including Dr. Md. Ziaul Haque, Dr. Mastura Begum, Dr. Nur Zaman Sarkar, and Dr. Tamanna Nusrat, later visited the hospital to check on the baby and assess her condition. BNP Health Secretary Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam and Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kayser Kamal serve as central coordinators of the health and legal support cells, respectively.
