Mymensingh: At least 20 people were injured as supporters of a BNP candidate and an independent candidate clashed in the Mymensingh-11 (Bhaluka) constituency, leading to the vandalism and arson of several party offices.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the clashes began on Sunday evening and continued until around 8 pm, with the administration struggling to control the situation. Tensions rose after independent candidate Mohammad Morshed Alam campaigned in the Bhatjor area, sparking confrontations with supporters of the BNP’s paddy sheaf candidate.
The violence escalated, resulting in an attack on the BNP upazila office near the Bhaluka bus stand, injuring at least 20 BNP activists and damaging several motorcycles. Offices of Chhatra Dal, the independent candidate, and Jubo Dal were subsequently vandalised and set on fire, with tyres burned on the roads, exacerbating the unrest.
Fire Service personnel responded promptly to the scene and managed to control the fires. Officer-in-Charge of Bhaluka Police Station Mohammad Zahidul Islam stated that police were working to manage the situation, with additional law enforcement personnel deployed in the area. As of the latest reports, army members were also attempting to restore order.
