Dhaka: The concluding ceremony of the two-day academic session on 'Evidence-Based Treatment Overview of Lung Cancer and Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR)' was held at the Clinical Oncology Department of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Southend University Hospital, UK, was present as the keynote speaker in this scientific session. He emphasized the need for establishing a full-fledged research institute at BMU to accelerate progress in cancer research in Bangladesh, describing it as a timely demand.
During the session, Dr. Islam discussed recent advances in international guideline-based lung cancer treatment, including staging and risk stratification, state-of-the-art SABR technology, and systemic therapy. The focus was on providing treatment based on international guidelines, modern radiotherapy, and SABR strategies, along with updates on systemic therapy and best practices in patient management.
BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest. The keynote speaker praised the BMU authorities for organizing such high-quality scientific sessions, which he said offer updated treatment methods of international standards and opportunities to acquire hands-on modern cancer management skills.
Dr. Islam also highlighted the importance for oncologists to stay updated with modern evidence-based treatment, international guidelines, and the latest advances in radiotherapy and systemic therapy. He stressed that modern and accurate knowledge is crucial to ensuring the best treatment for patients.
He mentioned the necessity of preparing the next generation of oncologists and accelerating Bangladesh's progress in cancer research. Promising full cooperation in implementing these initiatives, he expressed hope for continued involvement in BMU's academic activities in the future.
The event highlighted that such international academic cooperation, scientific lecture series, and specialized training will continue, significantly contributing to improving the quality of cancer treatment in the country. Eminent physicians, along with MD and FCPS Clinical Oncology residents, also participated in the session.
