Dhaka: Chairman of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) Hasan Jafir Tuhin emphasized the need to ensure proper and planned use of water in the interest of farmers in the Barind region. He highlighted the critical role water plays in the agriculture and livelihood of farmers in the area, stressing that merely increasing irrigation is insufficient. Instead, he advocates for improved water use efficiency and conservation of water sources for future generations.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the remarks were made by Tuhin while addressing a validation workshop on the findings of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) consultation. The event took place at a restaurant hall in Rajshahi city and was jointly organized by BMDA and ADB, with support from the Sustainable Agriculture Foundation Bangladesh (SAF) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).
The BMDA Chairman underscored that while irrigation facilities are vital for enhancing agricultural production in the Barind region, sustainable development cannot rely solely on excessive groundwater extraction. He called for comprehensive irrigation planning that considers water usage, sources, and future availability. To achieve this, Tuhin advocated for modern irrigation technology, water-saving farming methods, and increased use of surface water, noting the unique realities of the Barind region compared to others.
Tuhin also urged for the completion of a realistic feasibility study of the Barind project, leveraging ADB's insights and research. He emphasized the importance of long-term planning to address future water and agricultural challenges.
The workshop was attended by various experts, including Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Dr. Azizur Rahman, Executive Director of SAF Forhad Jamil, Head of Policy (GAIN) Dr. Mohammad Monirul Hasan, Senior Agriculture Specialist of ADB Dr. Noor Khandaker, Professor of Civil Engineering Department at RUET Niamul Bari, and Regional Head BRRI Dr. Mohammad Hossain. Additional Chief Engineer of BMDA Dr. Abul Kashem presided over the event.
Discussions at the workshop focused on the feasibility study of the Barind project, sustainable water resource management, and strategies to enhance farmers' productivity, with the validation of consultation results.
