Dhaka: Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust (BJWT) today distributed cheques of welfare grants amounting to Taka 2.10 crore to 320 journalists, including the families of fifteen deceased journalists. Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana distributed the cheques at a function at the DFP auditorium at Tathya Bhaban.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahbuba Farjana emphasized the role of journalists as the conscience of the nation, underscoring their influence in driving societal change. She noted the increasing responsibilities of journalists, particularly in light of the upcoming national elections, urging them to maintain neutrality.
The secretary highlighted the government's commitment to supporting journalists, revealing that since the trust's inception, a total of Taka 54 crore 81 lakh 76 thousand has been distributed. She assured continued cooperation from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Managing Director of Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Muhammad Abdullah reported that 3,428 journalists received welfare grants totaling Taka 10.70 crore last year. Additionally, families of journalists martyred in the July Uprising and injured journalists received honorariums, certificates, and Taka 54 lakh. Educational scholarships amounting to Taka 55.26 lakh were awarded to 305 children of journalists.
The event also featured speeches from Department of Mass Communication Director General Faizul Haque, Press Institute of Bangladesh Director General Faruk Wasif, and BJWT Board of Trustees members Shaheen Hasnat, Md. Alauddin, and Chiraranjan Sarkar, among others.
