Narail: The 54th death anniversary of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh was observed at Nur Mohammad Nagar in Chandibarpur union of the district today. Narail district administration organised various programmes to mark the day.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the programme began with the placing of floral wreaths at the portrait of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh. A series of events including a rally, a Guard of Honour, Qurankhani, Doa Mahfil, and a discussion meeting on the life of Nur Mohammad Sheikh were held at the Nur Mohammad Sheikh Memorial Museum and Library auditorium at Nur Mohammad Nagar, formerly known as Mahiskhola.
Mahishkhola, the birthplace of Nur Mohammad Sheikh, was renamed in his honour under Chandibarpur union in Narail sadar upazila. The Deputy Commissioner of Narail, Sharmin Akhter Jahan, attended the programmes and the discussion meeting as the chief guest. Other notable attendees included Deputy Director of Local Government at DC’s Office Julia Sukaina and Additional Police Super (ASP) Nur-E Alom Siddique, who were present as special guests.
Nur Mohammad Sheikh, born on February 26, 1936, at Mahishkhola village (now Nur Mohammad Nagar) in Narail sadar upazila, joined the then East Pakistan Rifles, now known as Border Guard Bangladesh, on February 26, 1959. He later participated in the Independence War in 1971 and was killed on September 5, 1971, at Goalhati in Jashore by the then Pakistan army.
