Dhaka:Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed an agreement with Airbus to acquire ten new aircraft, including four A350-900 widebody jets for long-haul international routes and six A321neo single-aisle jets for regional operations.
According to United News of Bangladesh, these new aircraft are expected to join Biman's fleet starting in 2033, as outlined by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The acquisition aims to enhance Biman's capacity for long-haul and regional flights, expand its route network, and improve passenger services and competitiveness in the aviation markets.
The agreement was formalized at a ceremony held at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden, with Biman represented by Chairman Rumee A Hossain and CEO Kaizer Sohail Ahmed, and Airbus by its President for South Asia, Jürgen Westermeier. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, along with other government officials and diplomats, attended the event.
Minister Millat emphasized that this acquisition is part of a broader plan to transform Bangladesh into a modern aviation hub. Biman Chairman Rumee highlighted the fleet expansion's alignment with Bangladesh's growing travel market. Airbus Executive Vice President for Sales Benoît de Saint-Exupéry stated that the new aircraft would enhance Biman's fleet strategy, supporting expansion to new destinations and meeting network demand.
European diplomatic representatives expressed support for the agreement, noting its significance in strengthening Bangladesh's commercial ties with Europe and contributing to economic modernization. The partnership between Biman and Airbus also includes cooperation in aviation technology, engineering, maintenance, training, and sustainable practices.
This fleet modernization is anticipated to improve air connectivity for passengers, businesses, tourists, and expatriates, aiding Biman's efforts to expand its international network.
