Bidisha Arrested in Financial Fraud Case in Dhaka

Dhaka: Police arrested Bidisha Siddique, the former wife of late Jatiya Party Chairman and former President HM Ershad, from Gulshan in the city on Tuesday night in connection with a financial fraud case. She was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in this case.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Bidisha was apprehended around 8:00 pm as she had an outstanding arrest warrant. The warrant was issued after a Dhaka court, on May 20, sentenced her to two years of imprisonment for her involvement in a fraud case concerning a flat. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 10,000, with an additional one-month imprisonment in default of payment.

The case dates back to February 2, 2008, when businessman AKM Mosharraf Hossain Sikdar from Dhaka’s Pallabi area filed a complaint at Gulshan Police Station. The complaint stated that Mosharraf had paid Bidisha Tk 75 lakh on July 10, 2001, for a flat in Baridhara, which was supposed to be delivered by July 10, 2002.

However, the flat was never handed over, and the complainant alleged that Bidisha issued a cheque for Tk 72 lakh on February 9, 2005, which bounced due to insufficient funds. The complainant further alleged that Bidisha not only failed to return the money or deliver the flat but also delayed the process on various pretexts and later threatened his life.
