Dhaka: The Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), organized a meeting to discuss the 'Work Permit and Security Clearance Process for Expatriates and Investors in Bangladesh'. The initiative aimed at simplifying and harmonizing procedures for expatriates in the country.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting involved representatives from BIDA, the Special Branch (SB), the National Security Intelligence (NSI), and other government agencies, including the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Authority. The focus was on improving efficiency, transparency, and coordination in investment facilitation processes as part of the Transformative Economic Policy Programme (TEPP), supported by the UK Government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Bangladesh's economic growth has led to increased demand for skilled foreign professionals and investors, but complex procedures have often been discouraging. The workshop sought to align institutional processes and promote respectful engagement with foreign applicants.
Md. Shaharul Huda, Executive Member of BIDA, emphasized the importance of a streamlined work permit system to strengthen investor confidence. He highlighted the need for strong coordination among institutions to improve service delivery and ensure a transparent environment.
Md. Ariful Hoque, Director General of BIDA, stated that work permit reforms are strategic steps toward creating a secure and business-friendly Bangladesh. Jesmin Akhter Khan, Joint Director of NSI, mentioned the necessity of rigorous yet efficient security vetting to safeguard national interests while providing a predictable clearance process for investors.
UNDP's support through TEPP aims to digitize and streamline processes between BIDA's One Stop Service (OSS) and the Ministry of Home Affairs, reducing manual steps and improving transparency. This effort is a significant move towards creating a more efficient environment, attracting global expertise and investment to support Bangladesh's economic growth.
