Dhaka: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 5.96 lakh yaba tablets, a foreign-made firearm, and five rounds of ammunition in separate operations in the Ukhiya and Ghumdhum border areas, resulting in the arrest of two suspected drug traffickers. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a patrol team from Palongkhali Border Outpost (BOP) under the Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB), acting on intelligence, intercepted two individuals carrying bags after they reportedly entered Bangladesh from Myanmar through the Jorakathi area of Ulubnia village around 5:10 a.m.
The team apprehended Nur Bashar, 22, and Abul Foyez, 25, as they attempted to escape. Upon searching their bags, BGB personnel discovered 350,000 yaba tablets packed in 35 cartons. During preliminary questioning, the detainees allegedly confessed to collecting the yaba from the Myanmar border with the intention of selling them at higher prices.
In a separate operation, a patrol team from Ghumdhum BOP under Cox's Bazar Battalion (34 BGB) recovered 246,000 yaba tablets, a foreign-made firearm, and five rounds of ammunition from the Nayapara border area. Acting on intelligence, a special patrol team led by Major Md Mehedi Hasan Ashik conducted the operation around 12:15 a.m., approximately 130 yards inside Bangladesh from Border Pillar No. 31. The drugs, firearm, and ammunition were found abandoned.
Legal proceedings are underway over the seizures, the BGB stated.
