Panchagarh: The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today provided free medical treatment and medicines to nearly 500 underprivileged people living in the border areas of Panchagarh as part of its humanitarian outreach programme. The event was organized by the Panchagarh Battalion (18 BGB) at the Dhamurhat Adarsha Girls' High School ground under the Giragaon Border Outpost (BOP) in Dhamur Union of Atwari upazila.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Thakurgaon Sector Commander Colonel Mohammad Suruj Mia attended the programme as the chief guest. The initiative aimed to ensure healthcare services for marginalised border residents, especially during the monsoon season when seasonal diseases are more prevalent and access to medical care is often limited. A team of experienced physicians provided free treatment to around 450 to 500 women, men, and children, while necessary medicines were distributed free of charge based on patients' needs.
Colonel Suruj Mia highlighted that BGB, besides safeguarding the country's independence, sovereignty, and borders, has been professionally carrying out its duties to prevent cross-border crimes such as smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and arms smuggling. He emphasized that the force is also committed to improving the living standards of border communities through humanitarian initiatives, including disaster response, relief distribution, free medical services, and educational support.
The programme was attended by the Civil Surgeon of Panchagarh, local public representatives, journalists, distinguished persons, and BGB officials, the release added.
