Dhaka: Two young men, including a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), have gone missing following the collapse of a section of the Meghna riverbank in Bhola Sadar upazila. The incident took place on Wednesday night while they were sitting with three other friends near Bholarkhal Fish Ghat in the Balur Math area of Shibpur union.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the missing individuals have been identified as BGB member Md Amzad, 26, and Md Rakib, 18. The group of five friends were reportedly seated on sand-filled geobags along the riverbank when the collapse occurred, plunging them into the river. While three managed to swim back to safety, Amzad and Rakib were swept away by the river's strong current.
Family members of Amzad have stated that he had been on leave for about two months and was due to return to work on September 19. They expressed concern over the delay in rescue efforts, noting that although the Fire Service and local administration were notified, no rescue team had arrived by 10:00pm. Coast Guard members did visit the site but allegedly left shortly after.
Md Monirul Islam, the officer-in-charge of Bhola Sadar Police Station, confirmed that police were dispatched to the scene following the incident report. However, as of 11:00pm, the two missing youths had not yet been located.
