Border guard dhaka: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today launched its two-week-long 'Fish Week 2026' programme, urging increased fish farming at all levels to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production. BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui inaugurated the programme by releasing fish fry of different species into a pond adjacent to Shaheed Captain Ashraf Hall at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana this morning.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BGB chief referred to the theme of National Fish Week 2026 - "A self-reliant country through silver fish, Bangladesh first" - and called for expanding fish farming wherever opportunities exist at individual and institutional levels. Bangladesh currently ranks second globally in freshwater fish production, and Siddiqui expressed hope that the country would secure the top position through sustained efforts.
He emphasized the need to properly utilise the country's marine fish resources in the Bay of Bengal. Siddiqui noted that fish farming does not always require large water bodies, as small ponds and other suitable water bodies can also be effectively used.
According to a BGB press release, increased fish production would help ensure nutrition and food security, create employment, and contribute to economic development. The BGB chief urged all concerned to support government initiatives to boost fish production and expand fish farming in ponds and water bodies at BGB installations and units.
The programme includes releasing fish fry, promoting fish farming, and conducting awareness activities on the conservation and increased production of fisheries resources.
